Some things come into existence deliberately and some by the activities of men. This could be said of this old and abandoned quarry site that has now become an attractive sight to the indigenes of Mpape and its environs. “Mpape”, meaning rock in Gwari, is a suburb in the FCT known for its mining activities.
The lake with its riveting look was born out of suspended and halted mining activity. You could say that it was born out of the ashes. Although the lake has been there for a while and a few residents go there to get water, it gathered more popularity and public enthusiasm recently as a result of its discovery by hikers, who took pictures in the area and posted on twitter. A tale of a prophet is not honoured in their home.
Like other fun and nature lovers that came across the discovery online, I set out to visit this “wonder of Mpape.” Sometimes, the words a picture speaks can only be understood by physical presence and so I visited in the company of a few friends.
The lake, almost surrounded by the remnant of the quarried rock (hills), had us walking on the cliff to get down to the water body. Lush green environment no doubt, hilly scenery from where you can have an aerial view of the city and the chills of the air around.
It was breathtaking seeing the rocky wall rise to meet the sky forming a cliff from where I took so many dives (of course in my head). Being close to the water gave me such a relaxing and calm state of mind. It was my escape from the world’s trouble. Such a rejuvenating feeling as my skin came in contact with the air from the lake.
Our arrival was greeted with grooving sounds blaring from the speakers of an onsite Disk Jockey (DJ) and other fun-loving individuals in batches, who were already there to enjoy the lovely scenery. Some had their picnic mats and baskets having a jolly good time with family and friends, some added games like ‘’Whot’’ and ‘’Ludo’’ to their time out with friends, and others were seen taking photos and selfies. A few vendors were on standby selling chicken and chips, popcorn, drinks, and ice-cream.
Still, with a remote look, this collaborative work of man and nature has been able to attract fun lovers, leisure seekers, and tourists to witness its aesthetics. Although tempting, the lake is not yet safe for swimming. It is said that some machinery used during the mining has been covered by the water so it is dangerous to go into the water.
This beautiful spot has offered an option to the Jabi Lake as one of the two relaxation spots in the FCT that is nearby a natural water body. When next you think about leisure at the lake and need another scenery asides the Jabi Lake, Crushed Rock Lake is a viable and interesting option.
